How to avoid being targeted by Chinese government bots
On May 24, Chinese authorities in Beijing posted a notice on WeChat asking users to avoid using the messaging app in China as it might be used to spread propaganda.
The notice was posted after a Chinese social media user noticed the app had been removed from the WeChat app store in mainland China, a move that was made in response to criticism that WeChat was being used by the Chinese government to spread false information.
The warning, which is similar to a similar one posted by other governments in the past, urged users to “stay away from the use of the Wechat service.”
In response, some WeChat users have reported being asked to delete their accounts, while others have reported that their accounts have been suspended.
This story has been updated to reflect WeChat’s recent removal from mainland China.
